Scientific activities

The scientific activities of the institute are closely related to biological disciplines traditional for the Faculty of Science (formerly Faculty of Biological Sciences) or the institutes of the Biology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic that co-exist and closely cooperate in one campus. Besides, new interdisciplinary research areas are developing on the border with physics, mathematics and informatics. The research ate the institute can be divided in several areas:

Environmental chemistry
Analysis and photochemical degradation of pesticides in freshwater systems, photochemical oxidation of biopolymers, analytical chemistry in environmental sciences. Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment, redox properties of wetland systems, degradation of surfactants from wastewater using constructed wetlands

Structural biochemistry
Structural functional analysis of protein complexes using electron microscopy and particle analysis.

Biophysical chemistry
Study of biochemical and molecular biology processes in living cells on the level of single molecules.

Nanotechnology
Application of biological macromolecules for aimed preparation of substances with defined structural and functional properties.

Glycobiology
Analysis of blood-feeding arthropods glycoproteins - identification of glycans and glycosylation sites with respect to the interaction of arthropod glycans with the host and to the transmission of dangerous infections.
